Garn®HeatMaster™ Effecta Windhager - Heath with Vision Heizomat®

Wood Heat

Heating large spaces in an efficient, sustainable manner can be a challenge. With the abundance of wood resources we have in Wisconsin, we can meet that challenge. North Wind offers a full line of high-efficiency, wood and pellet boilers that can provide clean, comfortable heat for your home or business, small or large. Our hydronic heating systems (liquid-based heating systems) provide more BTU's for your dollar by achieving a cleaner, more efficient burn. This process, known as gasification, results in virtually no smoke, no creosote, and no emissions. Once heat is generated from combustion, our systems effectively store that heat for use when you need it. For more information on the gasification process please click on the “Clean Burning” tab below.

Local cord wood can be a clean, efficient fuel source for residential and small commercial properties. To provide the cleanest burn, cord wood needs to be cut, split and seasoned for at least one full year covered to reach optimal dryness. Cord wood works best when burned hot and fast with any extra heat generated saved in thermal storage.

Garn: Built in Minnesota since 1983, GARN boilers have only 3 moving parts, efficiencies between 80 and 90%, and back up electric elements as an option. GARN boilers have industry exclusive integrated water storage between 1000 and 2000 gallons. GARN wood boilers are available in 3 sizes to heat from 2,000-10,000 square feet depending on insulation levels and heat distribution.

Effecta: Built by a 3rd generation family owned company in Sweden, Effecta boilers offer the lowest emissions and highest efficiencies of any wood boiler available in the US. Effecta boilers use an oxygen sensor similar to the one in your car to continually adjust the fuel to air ratio to provide the best efficiency and lowest emissions possible. Effecta boilers offer optional add-on pellet burners to provide automatic heating options. Coupled with appropriate size water storage, 3 sizes of Effecta boilers will heat between 1,500 and 7,000 square feet depending on insulation levels and heat distribution.

Wood pellets are mostly made from waste wood from manufacturing products from Wisconsin forests. These scraps are ground and then pressed into uniform pellets which are then bagged. Wood pellets are uniform in size and density. This enables them to be clean burning and automatically fed, burned and the ash removed by automatic systems. Wood pellets are a great option for residential to large commercial applications where users desire minimal interaction with their heating system, but want the benefits of local fuel sourcing, lower fuel costs, and unattended operation.

Windhager: A family owned company near Salzburg, Austria, Windhager has been manufacturing solid-fueled heating equipment since 1927. The Windhager Bio-win and Bio-win XL boilers are state-of-the-art pellet boilers with heat outputs from 50,000 btu to 200,000 btu. They offer completely automated operation, including manual or filling automated feeding from bulk storage, automatic cleaning and ash removal. Cleaning and bulk fuel filling can be done as little as 3 times a year, depending on application.

Wood chips allow for minimally processed fuel to be created on site, or delivered from an offsite local processor. Fuel costs for woodchips can be extremely low, making the economics quite attractive in high load applications. Due to the complexity and expense of the feed systems for these fuels, we recommend them when the heating requirements are large and or year round. Common in Europe is the growing of dedicated fuel feedstocks specifically for producing fuel feedstocks for wood chip boilers.

Heizomat Heizomat has been building high quality boilers in Bavaria since 1983. Heizomat boilers come in a wide range of sizes and burn a variety of biomass fuels, from pellets to wood chips to other difficult fuels such as chopped straw, miscanthus and switchgrass. Heizomat’s modular and pre-engineered feed systems do not require on-site fabrication, reducing installation costs. They include automatic feed from a custom fuel bin, automatic lighting, burning, modulation, and cleaning of heating surfaces and de-ashing to an ash can or dumpster. Service and maintenance is typically performed two or three times per year.

Burning cord wood cleanly and efficiently in a boiler is achieved through gasification. Gasification is the common name for the chemical process of Pyrolysis that biomass fuels (wood, pellets, grains, etc.) undergo when heated to extremely high temperatures that completely burn not only the fuel source, but also he exhaust gases from combustion. This process is achieved in two separate stages. In the primary stage, the load of wood is burned, driving off the flammable gasses and any water. Think of a campfire; this is the part of combustion that results in those orange and yellow flames and a fair bit of smoke. This smoke is fuel rich, and is burned in the second stage of combustion where additional air is mixed in resulting in a high temperature clean burn.

Each Spring, the USDA offers REAP grant funding for commercial biomass heating systems in rural areas. North Wind can help determine your business's eligibility and complete the grant writing process for you. Please contact us for details about the USDA REAP grant program.

Energy Security: Wisconsin has a plentiful resource of wood and by taking reforestration practices, we have made it into a renewable source of energy. When comparing the stability of our wood resources to that of traditional LP or natural gas prices in our state, you can see the piece of mind you'll receive when using wood heat.

Clean, comfortable heat: Our hydronic heating systems provide the comfortable heat delivery you want without the smoke and carbon emissions of low-efficiency or fossil fuel burning furnaces.

More heat for your dollar: We design and install our systems using some of the highest performing heating equipment on the market. And through our thermal design process, we take the time to properly size your system and ensure that it meets your heating needs. So rest assured you're getting more heat for your investment.
