How to Stabilize Your Home’s Finances With the Sun: Using Solar as a Steadying Force Amid Economic Uncertainty

Sep 21, 2023

With recession worries lingering and economic uncertainty at an all-time high, we understand that making any major financial decisions may seem daunting. Interest rates are rising, inflation is rampant, and the idea of selling your home may seem far-fetched right now. So, how does solar energy come into play amidst all this chaos?

Here's the thing— solar energy might just be the smartest investment you can make during these unpredictable times. It's a financially sound decision with numerous benefits that will indeed fortify your finances. Let's see how to stabilize your home's finances with solar energy.

Lock in Today's Energy Rates

Remember when gasoline cost just $1.11 per gallon in 1993? Today, it's nearly $4 per gallon. If you could have locked in that lower rate for 30 years, wouldn't you have? Solar panels give you the chance to fix today's utility rates for decades, saving you money as conventional energy costs rise in the future.

Get Predictable, Low-Risk Returns

The stock market can be quite the roller coaster, but solar energy promises a stable and dependable return. As long as the sun keeps shining, you'll enjoy consistent savings throughout the life of your system. Our experts can even map out the exact pennies you'll save over 30 years. Now that's financial clarity!

Increase Your Home Value

Solar panels are proven to boost property value by 4.1%, according to a Zillow survey of US homes. What's even more impressive is that the average cost of solar installation (after tax credits and incentives) matches the value increase, essentially giving you free electricity from day one. This is an opportunity you may regret missing out on.

Save on Transportation Costs

Still missing those 1993 gasoline prices? By pairing an electric vehicle (EV) with solar power, you'll spend around $415 per year on vehicle fuel, as opposed to the $1,260 gas-based alternative. That means solar can help you cut your transportation fuel costs to a fraction of today's prices.

Investing in Your Community

Installing solar panels on your home not only benefits yourself, but it can also have a positive impact on your neighbors and your community. One advantage of having solar panels is the ability to generate excess energy that can be sent back to the power grid. This over-production of sun power can be distributed to nearby homes and businesses, reducing their reliance on nonrenewable fossil fuel energy and an overall reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in your community.

So, there you have it. The many reasons why switching to solar makes sense in today's world. It's not about politics or environmental activism, but about making a wise financial choice for your home and family. Solar energy is your best bet in uncertain times like these, offering steady returns, increased property value, and lower energy costs. And if it also happens to save the planet and promote global energy independence, well, that's just the icing on the cake.

We're here to support you, our community, every step of the way in transitioning to solar power. Let's work together towards a brighter, more sustainable future! Reach out to Northwind Solar today for more information.

Northwind Solar will Transition Forward Note: This communication from Northwind Solar CEO Josh Stolzenburg is a message to our stakeholders, clients, and friends about an exciting new development at Northwind. I’ve been consumed, for nearly two decades now, leading a passion project called Northwind Solar. Originally conceived to provide meaningful work for those who wanted to advance climate and energy solutions, we’ve grown into one of Wisconsin’s most effective and respected solar companies. Thirty committed employees (of whom 16 share ownership) now work out of our Amherst office. The time has come for me to step out of the role of CEO, shift my Northwind work to new priorities, and cultivate next generation leadership. As a company, we have matured over the years and come a long way from the conceptual white boards I scrawled on the walls of a friend’s basement in 2007, My crude “business plan” evolved from educational work (with the Midwest Renewable Energy Association) which fueled my desire to put meaningful green kilowatt hours on the Wisconsin grid to offset fossil fuel use. I engaged a couple of technically proficient business partners in 2008 and we began to offer wind, solar heating, and solar electric to suit the needs of a growing customer base. In the mid-teens we shifted our exclusive focus to solar electric (including battery systems and, now, smart electrification). From the beginning, community involvement was an important corollary to our professional work. My early involvement with the development of the Central Rivers Farmshed and work with the WI Farmer’s Union led to compelling work with and support for local small farms. Until recently, I’ve advised Mid-State Technical College’s renewable energy program since it’s inception in 2008 and we’ve been able to hire graduates of that program consistently since 2010. I’ve served on the Renew WI board of directors since 2019 and helped to create SolarShare WI, a thriving community solar investment cooperative. Part of the Northwind ethos has been distributed management and shared ownership. We formalized that in 2017 when we converted from a partnership to a worker owned cooperative. Employees could buy in, become owners, and share in the financial rewards and governance. In the seven years since there have been challenges, successes, and changes in personnel as we have learned to be a democratic company.
